I’ve been thinking about doing a newsletter for my personal blog for about a year now. I have the blog restricted to only those registered but doing so creates a fairly large barrier for my casual readers (family and friends). Having the blog updates emailed to them each week would be the perfect way to maintain my private family blog. I finally found a solution that I am satisfied with and has worked flawlessly so far.
MailPoet Newsletters (formerly Wysija) is my plugin of choice for this type of task. It has a premium version but the free version suits my needs just fine. I installed the plugin and was able to create a newsletter in a minute and send it out to a few test users. Now I can create ad-hoc newsletters and automated newsletters based on content being published to the blog. A big thanks to the MailPoet team that have created this sweet plugin.
I’ve had the chance to play around with some email code recently and it’s been fun. Here is something that I learned that I think should be easier to find for those who are getting into writing an app that handles emails via IMAP.
What is the difference between an email’s Unique Identifier (UID) and an emails’s Message Sequence Number (MSN?).
- Unique Identifier: A unique number referencing an email that does not change over time
- Message Sequence Number: The relative position from the first message in the mailbox
You can read more about this exciting IMAP email topic at http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc3501.html
When I recently did a fresh install of OS X I used this tutorial on how to move my Mac’s Mail.app to a new computer and it worked without a hitch. Nice! : )
So, I don’t usually get scams or spam in my email since I use gmail but one recently got through and it made me laugh. It is sad that people actually fall for these even though it seems blatantly obvious to me that it is a scam. Isn’t there a place to report these kinds of emails?
